Problem: I read this book with first graders and now they all think I'm really funny. Feeling a lot of pressure to live up to this new persona. Considering retirement.

10/10 substack post, 10/10 book, 10/10 text thread, that's a 30 overall

We are obsessed with this book in our house. My kids have asked to read it multiple times a day since we receive it on release day and now, instead of saying "bye" when they walk into school in the morning, they call out "Love you, mommy! You smell like a baby!" Amazing.

Why yes I did buy futuristic sunglasses for read-alouds of this book in the library.

Can't wait to read this! Also, I would LOVE to hear your breakdown of the "game" in different comedic picture books.

My mom had a DYMO when I was a kid! It had such a satisfying “click” which I loved so I’d sneak it from her desk to label my brother’s He-Man figures. Sadly my mom didn’t appreciate “Smellator” the way my brother and I did.

I love that this book feels like the natural progression of the game-ified humor in "Guess Again!" -- one of our family's long-time favorites. :)

And since it's Daylight Savings, it's also reassuring to know the future is (at least temporarily) one hour closer, because I'm totally on board for calling the thing in the middle of our face a mushroom.

My 5yo was having a moment when our preorder came in, and then he started reading the book aloud, and, yes, he did feel so smart and funny. He likes to know he's in control of things, so the moment shifted. I'm actually now realizing that I haven't read it aloud yet! It's his job!

Also: My 2yo through the monitor last night when he should have been asleep: "You smell like a baby!"

12/10. Thanks, guys.

My boys and I got to enjoy the live reading of this at the Central Library here in Austin, and it was a TREAT! We are raising a new generation of Susan-thankers.

I read this to my kindergarten students, and they immediately asked me to read it again, which I think is the highest praise a picture book can get.

I read this while on an airplane and I fully laughed aloud. Mainly the Jon + Shawn banter, please bring that back any time.

I am totally here for this new dynamic, especially if it elicits sentences like this: “It’s like a Lincoln Towncar that makes labels.”

Have now read this book out loud to our daughter and can attest she thinks we are very silly people indeed.
